The trial of the controversial Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi has opened. He's charged with paying for sex with an underage prostitute, and then trying to use his influence to cover it up.

Berlusconi didn't attend the opening session, which lasted all of seven minutes and was devoted to formalities. The trial has been adjourned until May 31st. Unlike other trials, this one puts the premier's personal life under scrutiny.

A conviction may end his political career. Both Berlusconi and the teenager Karima el-Mahroug have denied the accusations. Outside the Milan courthouse, Berlusconi supporters swapped insults with his opponents. Berlusconi's defense and political allies, are trying to get the trial transferred to the Tribunal of Ministers, which deals with offences committed by public officials in the execution of their duties.
