Forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi battled rebels on Thursday for control of a border crossing into Tunisia. Fighting spilled onto Tunisia's territory, triggering a protest from Tunis. Battles are now being fought on different frontlines from Libya's border with Tunisia in the west to its border with Egypt in the east.

Libyan government troops regained control of the Dehiba-Wazin border crossing on the Tunisian border on Thursday after clashes with rebels.

Fighting spilled onto the Tunisian territory,as rebels retreated into the Tunisian side. Libyan government forces fired Grad rockets on the rebels, and some hit Tunisian soil.

The fighting sparked panic among refugee families who had just crossed or were trying to cross the border.

The fighting appears to be part of a broader government move to root out rebel outposts beyond their eastern heartland.

Meanwhile, Libyan state television reported that Gaddafi's forces had seized control of the town of Kufra in the remote southeastern desert. The opposition disputed the report.

Rebels said the western mountain town of Zintan were also under attack from government troops.

Elsewhere in Misrata, a Libyan rebel spokesman said at least nine civilians were killed in the latest shelling by government forces.

Rockets and other artillery fire slammed into Misrata's western Garara neighborhood, sending up deadly showers of shrapnel.

Misrata has become the focus of fighting in recent weeks. A stalemate has emerged, despite the city largely remaining under rebel control.
