Tanks have rolled into the northern port of Latakia, a key city in the heartland of Syria's ruling elite. Security forces there opened fire on anti-government demonstrators, while heavy shooting rang out again Thursday in the southern city of Daraa.

A Syrian human rights group says about 500 Syrians have been killed since anti-government protests erupted six weeks ago. In a further blow to President Bashar al-Assad, more than 200 of his Baath Party members from Daraa and surrounding regions have stepped down.

Diplomats said signs were also emerging of discontent within the army. Unconfirmed reports say that several soldiers from another unit refused to fire on civilians in the city.
