Voters in northern Nigeria have cast their ballots in defiance of violence that has held up gubernatorial elections.

Both Christians and Muslims inked their fingers to vote in elections held in the two states of Bauchi and Kaduna. Voting went smoothly, though both areas saw a low voter turnout. Elections in the two states were delayed by violence following the country's presidential ballot.

Youths launched violent protests in northern cities last week after President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian from the south, was declared winner of the election, defeating Muhammadu Buhari, a Muslim from the north. At least 500 people were killed in the rioting. Soldiers have taken over security for the hard-hit states, where many people remain displaced.
