Amateur video shows hundreds of young people holding a candlelit march through the streets of the Syrian town of Qamishli on Tuesday.

Protesters were purportedly demanding an end to the military siege on Daraa and the Damascus suburb of Douma. An eyewitness says one young protester was arrested at the end of the march, and military security forces fired into the air.

Speaking from Egypt, a Syrian human rights activist said the latest wave of arrests numbered more than 1,000 people. Rights groups say at least 545 Syrians have been killed since the unrest began in Daraa in mid-March. Also on Tuesday, Germany and Britain said they were seeking the imposition of EU sanctions against Syrian leaders, after the US announced it was doing so last week.
