Pakistan's army says US military personnel in the country will be reduced to the "minimum essential" level.

The army statement gives no details, but it comes amid anger in the country over the American raid that killed Osama bin Laden. The statement also says that if the US launches a similar raid in the future, then the army and intelligence services will review their ties with Washington. It is the first comment from the army since Monday's operation. The army says it will also conduct an investigation into intelligence failures that allowed the world's most wanted man to remain undetected on its soil.

Pakistan's army has long been seen as the most effective institution in an unstable country. However, Pakistani public opinion has been critical of the perceived violation of national sovereignty by the US.
