Cote d'Ivoire's Constitutional Council has declared Alassane Ouattara the winner of the country's presidential election. The declaration reversed an earlier decision and put an end to a month-long power struggle.

The Constitutional Council made it absolutely clear who is in charge of the nation.

Paul Yao N'Dre, President of Cote d'Ivoire Constitutional Council, said, "The constitutional council endorsed the decision by the peace the security council of the African Union on the settlement of the crisis in our country. Article 2 proclaims Mr. Alassane Ouattara president of the republic of cote d'ivoire. "

The constitutional council had previously acknowledged Laurent Gbagbo as the winner of the November polls, while the country's electoral body declared Ouattara president-elect.

The dispute put the western African country into months of crisis.

But N'Dre declined to comment on whether is initial decision had been wrong.

"The sons and daughters of this country must come together, talk together so that peace returns permanently, so that there is social cohesion and Cote d'Ivoire can continue its development." Paul Yao N'Dre said.

N'Dre said he met Ouattara at his temporary base in a lagoon-side hotel and confirmed that Ouattara would take the presidential oath in front of the constitutional council on Friday.

But a spokesman for the Cote d'ivoire's military said on Thursday that the country's troops had captured remnants of a militia loyal to Gbagbo from a naval base in Abidjan, which highlights the problems Ouattara faces in restoring security after a bitter conflict.
