Refugee influx ignites discussion on Schengen Treaty

A refugee influx from the war-torn North Africa into Europe. Most of them firstly choose Italy and France, as they have more relatives there. This have put many countries under the Schengen Treaty on alert. They are now havein ga second thought on their easy travelling policies.

The Schengen agreement was signed on 1985, between five of the ten member states of the European Economic Community.

The Schengen rules were absorbed into European Union law by the Amsterdam Treaty in 1999. The area now now also included three non-EU member states, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland.

Implementing the Schengen rules involves eliminating border control with other Schengen members while simultaneously strenghtening border controls with non-member states.
