At the conclusion of the G8 summit in France on Friday, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said that the G8 countries have promised tens of billions of dollars in aid to Tunisia and Egypt and held out the prospect of further aid to other Arab countries in the aftermath of domestic uprisings.

Sarkozy said that on top of a 20 billion dollar credit line provided by the World Bank and other regional lenders, there would be an equal measure of aid from other sources. 10 billion dollars from oil-rich Gulf Arab states and another 10 billion dollars in bilateral aid. Most of the aid will come in the form of loans to the two countries.
