In northern Afghanistan, six people were killed when a suicide bomber wearing a police uniform attacked a provincial governor's compound on Saturday. The dead included a police chief and two German soldiers. The top German commander in the country was injured.

The bomber detonated his explosives vest in a room in the governor's office complex in Takhar province. High-ranking Afghan officials were meeting with senior officers of the international assistance force. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

Ambulances rushed to the scene to hurry the injured to hospital as police searched through the debris at the compound.

The commander of NATO forces for Northern Afghanistan, German general major Markus Kneip and the governor of Takhar province, Abdul Jabar Taqwa were among those who were injured.

Taqwa's bodyguard, said it all happened in a flash.

Ghulam Hussain, Bodyguard of Takhar Governor, said, "I was following the governor when he called me, asking me to go faster. Suddenly a big explosion happened. We don't know how it happened and who did it, we lost our vision."

The most high-profile casualty was General Dawood Dawood, police chief of north Afghanistan.

The loss of such a prominent and influential leader is seen as a big blow to the Afghan security force which is struggling to professionalise and shake off a reputation for abuse and corruption.

It may also complicate the NATO's efforts to prepare for the start of a security handover from foreign forces to Afghan soldiers and police in some parts of north Afghanistan.
