Forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi have cut electricity supplies to much of the Western Mountains, threatening water supplies and stepping up a war of attrition with rebels who hold the plateau.

The blackout, which began five days ago, has coincided with an increase in artillery strikes on the town of Arrujban.

People say that the actions of Gaddafi's forces are causing much distress.

Riad, local resident said "It is because the tyrant has blockaded all the western mountains. We have had our electricity cut and off and we can't get vegetables and water or anything."

People say that the actions of Gaddafi's forces are causing much distress.

The rebels are conducting basic training in Arrujban for new recruits who want to join their ranks to defend the region.

Ali El Assouad, Chief Rebel Instructor said "We asked young people to carry weapons and we opened a camp to train those young people. Although the current conditions are not helping the security conditions. We don't have enough weapons but we will manage."

Rebels in Arrujban say pro-Gaddafi forces some 20 kilometer away in the plains have stepped up late-night shelling over the past five days. Rebel patrols have observed the positions of pro-Gaddafi forces in the desert.

A number of homes have been hit in the past week and the shelling often comes at night.

Supplies of humanitarian aid are limited. Fuel is running low, meaning fewer people can afford to make the long journey to Tunisia to import supplies.
