Italy recognizes Libyan opposition

Italian Foreign Minister, , has confirmed his country's recognition of the Libyan National Transitional Council. The acknowledgement boosts the legitimacy of the opposition rebel-aligned political movement.

He said, "I confirm once again my full political support and the Italian full political support to the National Council and of couse I repeated that Gaddafi regime is over, he has to leave the power, he has to leave the country."

Frattini opened a consulate in the Libyan opposition base of Benghazi. He signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Transitional Council's foreign affairs representative, Ali Essawy. He also vowed to provide financial assistance to the cash-strapped council. Italy was one of the first European countries that recognized the opposition movement as a legal representative of Libyan people.
