A lawmaker and former banker has been elected as President of Latvia at a time of high political tension after the outgoing state leader Valdis Zatlers moved to dissolve the legislature. The winner Andris Berzins defeated the incumbent Zatlers in a second round of voting. After being elected, Berzins tried to convince the public about his independence.

Andris Berzins, Newly Elected Latvian President said "If anyone thinks that I will follow someone's orders or some oligarch, then don't expect that of me. I may try to do more than is written in the constitution. It is possible. But I will not do anything that is in contradiction with legislation and against the interests of Latvia."

Berzins was active in politics just after Latvia regained its independence from the former Soviet Union in 1991 and was then a long-time head of a leading Latvian bank until 2004. He was later head of the country's chamber of commerce, before returning to parliament in elections in October last year. The choice of a different president doesn't affect the dissolution process, on which a referendum will be held on July 23rd. Most pollsters expect people to support removing the current parliament. New elections would then be held in September.
