Defense ministers attend 10th Asia Security Summit

The tenth Asia Security Summit will kick off at eight p.m. local time Friday in the Shangri-la Hotel in Singapore. The summit, also known as the Shangri-La Dialogue, is one of the largest and most important multilateral meetings in the Asian-Pacific region.

A total of 27 countries and regions have sent delegations to the summit. According to its organizer, the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies, this year's summit will be the highest-profile, gathering defense ministers and other high-ranking government officials in the region.

Chinese defense minister Liang Guanglie will be present at the summit for the first time in the ten years since its establishment. He will deliver a key-note address on Sunday morning on China's International Security and Cooperation. Liang is also expected to deliberate on China's defense policies and its policies in promoting regional security and cooperation and building a harmonious Asia Pacific region. During the summit, Liang will hold bilateral meetings with defense leaders from other countries. The meeting will also be the last one for US defense Minister Robert Gates in his current position as he is retiring in June.
