Chinese President Hu Jintao has wrapped up a 4-day inspection tour in Hubei Province in Central China. Drought relief work there is a top concern for the President during the visit.

HuBei Province has long been celebrated as one of the most important grain production bases of China, boasting vast stretches of lakes and farm fields. But the lack of rainfalls in Spring and early Summer there are posing severe challenges to the agricultural sector there. Hu Jintao joined farmers working in croplands seriously affected by the lingering drought. The farmers there are racing against time to transform paddy fields into arable land to cultivate drought-resistance crops like corn, peanuts and potatoes.

Hu Jintao told local officials accompanying his visit that the drought relief work is the current top priority. He said the local governments have to do everything within their strength to ensure the funding and relief materials as well as technology supply to resolve the drinking water shortage and minimize the damages to grain production.

Hu Jintao also inspected Danjiangkou Reservoir, which plays an important role in water conservancy and the south-to-north water diversion project. Hu JIntao said in face of the severe drought, the reservoir needs to work out scientific plan to readjust the volume of water dischagring from its storage so that local residents' daily water consumption can be supplied.
