It started late on Thursday at an arsenal in the Republic of Udmurtia, some 900 kilometers east of Moscow. Nearly 30,000 people are reported to have been evacuated from the surrounding area.

Witness said, "We were sleeping. I grabbed my child and, as you can see, I myself am in a nightgown."

"I don't know what to say. I have not even seen my parents, I don't even know how to find them." Witness said.

Explosions broke windows in buildings as far as 10 kilometers from the arsenal. The cause of the blaze is not known. Russia's Deputy Defense Minister Dmitry Bulgakov told the ITAR-Tass news agency that the arsenal stores a small number of artillery rockets, but that they are not in danger of exploding.
