Protesters belonging to a labour union called PAME of the Communist party occupies Greece's Finance Ministry building in Athens, just as Greece wraps up tough negotiations with international officials on new austerity measures.

About 200 protesters blockade the entrance to the ministry. They took down the European flag and replaced it with their own union flag. The protest came as experts from the EU, European Central Bank and IMF were finishing up a review of Greece's implementation of economic reforms in return for close to 160 billion U.S. dollars in rescue loans.

Greece has so far received 52 million dollars from its rescue deal. Greek officials were also completing tough negotiations on the details of more austerity measures needed to ensure the country can avoid defaulting on its debt. The original bailout plan envisaged the country being able to tap bond investors next year, but with the interest rates on Greek bonds remaining exceptionally high, that appears increasingly unlikely.

Christos Katsiotis, Organizational Member of PAME, said, "The European Union is a union of big interests. All their decisions are against the people, they are against workers, against poor farmers, against employees. This movement will take action against them."
