Chinese VP eyes boosting common development with Chile

China's Vice President, Xi Jinping, has made his first visit to Chile since taking up the post.

China's Vice President Xi Jinping made a speech at the Santiago-based UN Economic Commission for Latin America and Caribbean during his trip in Chile. Xi Jinping said bilateral relations have seen fast development since two countries forged diplomatic ties 41 years ago, the second decade of the new century will provide fresh opportunities for both sides to enhance their ties and become good partners. China is willing to make efforts for bilateral relations that cover more areas.

At a meeting with Patricio Melero Abaroa, president of Chile's Chamber of Deputies, Xi Jinping said his visit is aimed at implementing the consensus the two heads of state have reached, promoting cooperation and deepening friendship between the two peoples.

Xi Jinping said the Chinese side highly values the role parliamentary exchanges can play in promoting bilateral ties, Melero said the Chilean parliament is willing to further advance close communication with China's National People's Congress and will support cooperation between two countries in various sectors. He reiterated that Chile supports a One-China policy.

Xi Jinping met with High Commissioner of the Republic of French Polynesia and the head of the government.

Xi Jinping said the two sides enjoy a time-honored friendship, and China is ready to make efforts with French Polynesia in expanding cooperation, especially in cultural exchanges, and economic cooperation.

The Chinese Vice President arrived in Santiago early Thursday morning. Chile is the last leg of Xi Jinping's current four-nation trip that has already taken him to Italy, Cuba and Uruguay.
