President Hu makes six-point proposal to deepen ties with Kazakhstan

Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao has met with Kazakhstan's Prime Minister, Karim Masimov. He made a six-point proposal during Tuesday's talks, aimed at further strengthening cooperation between the two countries.

Strategic partners, China and Kazakhstan are set to further cooperate, politically and economically.

Chinese President Hu Jintao says planning and guidance from the state level should come first. He's proposing a mechanism for the Prime Ministers from both countries to meet on a routine basis.

He adds that trade, investment, and financial cooperation should be high on the agenda as well. The President reiterated a trade volume goal of 40 billion US dollars by 2015. Hu Jintao also suggested establishing a Free Trade Zone, pushing forward currency swaps, and settling trade in local currencies.

He said cooperation should be deepened in energy, by safely operating existing oil and natural gas routes, while constructing new China-Kazakhstan pipelines.

Hu Jintao then touched on partnerships in high-tech, energy-efficient, and environment-friendly industries, as well as transport, cable links, and agriculture.

Prime Minister Karim Masimov said the upcoming SCO Summit, and the anniversary of official ties between the two countries, bring about new opportunities to further develop bilateral relations.

The Chinese leader will also attend the 10th annual Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit, scheduled for Wednesday in Astana. His nine-day tour will later continues with stops in Russia and Ukraine.

President Hu Jintao has also met his Tajik counterpart, Emomali Rahmon, in Astana. Their talks come one day before the SCO Summit. The two leaders discussed bilateral cooperation, and other major issues of common concern. Both Hu and Rahmon are scheduled to attend the SCO Summit, which opens on Wednesday.
