The Libyan government has accused NATO of killing nine civilians in an airstrike on a residential neighborhood in the capital, adding to its charges that the alliance is striking non-military targets.

NATO acknowledged, that its planes hit targets in Tripoli, and said itdid hit a civilian house.

A huge column of smoke was seen rising over buildings in Tripoli on Sunday after at least four daytime NATO airstrikes sounded over the Libyan capital.

Shortly after the strikes, journalists based in Tripoli were rushed by government officials to the destroyed building, which appeared to have been partially under construction.

Later in the day a second survey of the site was organized by government minders.

Abdul-Ati Al-Obeidi, Libyan Foreign Minister, said, "In the early hours of this morning, the barbarian murderous organization of NATO, supported and funded by criminal governments and criminal politicians, carried out an unjustified airstrike against the civilian neighborhood, directly targeting a group of ordinary houses and murdering nine civilians, including two children, and injuring 18 others."

Despite claims by the Libyan government, daytime NATO strikes appear to be repeatedly pounding the same set of targets in central Tripoli, a series of government buildings and at the city's outskirts, radar installations and military bases.

A NATO mission spokesman said on Sunday that NATO is aware of the reports regarding Sunday's strikes and is investigating. But he said NATO does not know where in Tripoli the alleged bombing occurred.

He said the Gadhafi regime has made false claims in the past about NATO having caused civilian deaths.

Libya's Health Ministry says over 800 civilians have been killed in NATO airstrikes since they began in March. The figure could not be independently confirmed.
