Brazil police secure football stadium region

A joint police and army operation aimed at rooting out criminal elements has been carried out in a shantytown near the legendary Maracana football stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

Hundreds of police officers and troops backed by helicopters and several armored vehicles took control of the area without an exchange of gunfire.

17 shantytowns had already been pacified by security forces in the run-up to the next Football World Cup.

The iconic Maracana stadium is being rebuilt for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.It will host the World Cup final match and the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2016 Olympics.
