The Yan'an Executive Leadership Academy in northwest China runs many courses for Communist Party Members throughout the year. Our Reporter Zhang Nini went to the school where the Party's theories are taught, and its core values and beliefs are strengthened.

History has left an indelible memory here.

Famous for its cave dwellings and undulating hills, Yan'an was a revolutionary base for 13 years, from the end of the Long March to the dawn of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

Here, history is reviewed and scrutinized, not just by backpackers, but also the senior public servants, the pillar force of today's Chinese Communist Party.

Han Yuting is a trainee at the Yan'an Executive Leadership Academy. She believed the training is essential to re-experience the spirit of a bygone era.

Han Yuting said, "This learning experience is unique. Yan'an is THE place to learn the CPC spirit, namely hard working, serving the people, and seeking truth with an open mind. These values are essential to right decision making. It's different from the training I have received abroad."

Han is among a class of twenty ministerial-level students attending a seminar on Party Theory Innovation and Lessons from History. The curriculum also includes clean governance and Party-Masses relationship, courses that have present-day implications.

Qi Tao, director of Shandong Provincial Education Bureau, said, "One story impressed me. An official was killed by lightning during a government meeting. Hearing of the incident, one villager complained that it should be Mao Zedong who was stricken by lightning. It turned out that the source of the grudge comes from a heavy tax levied on villagers. So a corresponding policy was initiated to alleviate the tax. History proves that our policy answers people's needs."

Some of the courses are taught on the site where history was made. The trainees have shifted their afternoon class to Yangjialing. Here the Party Constitution was passed during the Seventh National People's Congress of the CPC in 1945. In one of the cave home, Liu Shaoqi wrote the famous "How to be a Good Communist".

Zhang Weixing, dep. director-general of Ministry of Science and Technology, said, "I have heard so much of this history. But being in Yangjialing for the first time, the experience is unparalleled. Liu Shaoqi wrote his book in such harsh conditions, now we have decent tables and computers, yet no one has ever produced a book of equal importance. Being in Yan'an helps to get down to earth. "

The evening is spent with jolly good spirits. Swinging their bodies to the music of drums and trumpets, the trainees, mostly in mid-life and some with bulging bellies, were trying the entertainment of the old revolutionaries. It's called "passion education."

How well they could master the rustic dance is unknown, but the experience was something the trainees all took great joy in.
