Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez, has gone on television explain he has undergone surgery in Cuba to have a tumor removed. But Chavez insists he's on the road to a full recovery.

Amid widespread speculation that he might be seriously ill, 56-year-old Chavez made his first televised speech to the nation since the surgery on June 10th in Havana. The surgery was carried out after an initial operation nearly three weeks ago for the removal of a pelvic abscess.

He said it was a mistake not to have taken better care of his health through medical checkups.

Chavez did not say how much longer he expected to remain in Cuba recovering. And it's still unclear what type of cancer is involved or the nature of Chavez' treatment.

In a broadcast message Thursday evening, Hugo Chavez said that he has been operated on for
