According to the New York Times, the case against Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the former International Monetary Fund chief charged with sexually assaulting a hotel housekeeper, is near collapse.

The paper says, that although forensic evidence shows there was a sexual encounter between Strauss-Kahn and the maid, investigators have uncovered major holes in the accuser's credibility.

She repeatedly lied about the circumstances of the case and about herself. The paper also adds that prosecutors met with Strauss-Kahn's lawyers on Thursday and discussed whether to dismiss the felony charges.

Strauss-Kahn's defense attorney says the former IMF chief will go back to court in New York on Friday to seek changes to his bail conditions.
