Rescuers are racing against time to save 40 workers trapped underground in two coal mine disasters in southwest China.

Workers at Guizhou Province's Niupeng coal mine are trying to release water before sending rescuers into the flooded pit. The flood occurred on Saturday morning when 29 miners were working at the shafts.

Eight workers managed to escape to safety. In a separate mining disaster, three people were killed while 19 others remain trapped after part of a coal mine in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region collapsed.

Rescuers say it is difficult to reach the miners, who are trapped almost 400 meters underground. Days of heavy rain were blamed for the cave-in.
