In the latest violence in Yemen, the local government says al-Qaeda militants have attacked military troops in the southern province of Abyan. 13 al-Qaeda militants and 10 soldiers were killed and dozens of others from both sides injured.

Officials say the militants were trying to wipe out a Mechanized Brigade, which was encircled by al-Qaeda fighters about a month ago. They say clashes are still going on in various parts of the city. And in the southern province of Taiz, at least two armed tribesmen were killed and seven others seriously injured on Sunday during clashes with troops of the republican guards.

Officials say President Ali Abdullah Saleh remains bedridden in Saudi Arabia, and has difficulty breathing and talking. Saleh is in hospital following an attack on his palace months a month ago. But despite his ill health, the president refuses to sign a gulf-brokered deal to step down.
