Cambodia has re-opened an ancient Angkor temple to tourists following 16 years of reconstruction work. The three-tiered Baphuon temple was built in 1060 and is known for its bas-reliefs dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site is located three kilometers northeast of the country's famed Angkor Wat temple. Baphuon was built on a hill of sandy soil that gradually weakened over time and caused the structure to crumble.

An initial attempt to reconstruct the monument started in 1960, but work stopped a decade later during Cambodia's civil war. A team of archaeologists funded by the French government begun their work on Baphuon in 1995. Cambodian King, Noro-dom Si-ham-oni, and French Prime Minister, Francois Fillon, attended Sunday's opening ceremony.
