A pipeline carrying gas from Egypt to Israel and Jordan has been blown up by saboteurs forcing a shutdown in the flow of gas.

The explosion took place at a station along the pipeline in the northern Sinai Peninsula at Bir Abd, 60 kilometers east of the Suez Canal.

It's the third attack on the pipeline since early February. A security official says men with guns in a small truck forced him to leave the station and then planted the explosives. The sound of the explosion was heard across the desert, frightening nearby residents, and tongues of fire could be seen above the station. The natural gas company that runs the pipeline closed it down after the explosion.
