About 2,000 activists have marched through the Arab neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah, in Jerusalem. Friday's event was held to show support for UN recognition of a Palestinian state.

Israeli and Palestinian protesters waved Palestinian flags, and placards reading "Only Free People Can Negotiate." The Palestinian Authority plans to seek UN recognition of an independent country in September. The proposed nation would include the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem. Israel captured those territories in the 1967 Mideast War.

The Palestinian's UN initiative, meant to step up international pressure on Israel to withdraw from occupied lands, was endorsed by the Arab League on Thursday.
