The story of the young girl who survived Saturday's train collision has drawn attention across the country. Two-year-old Xiang Wei-yi's condition is improving day by day. Following surgery on Sunday, the last survivor of the train crash was visited by one of the firefighters who rescued her.

Jiang Jianxu is the instructor of a fire fighting squadron in the city of Wenzhou.

He was among the soldiers who pulled two-year old Yiyi from the wreckage, after she'd been trapped for over 20 hours.

Jiang said, "We clearing up when we found this little girl. Her right hand was still moving, but she had no strength at all. The 20 hours of rescue work had made us exhausted too, but seeing her we regained our strength. We cleared the things around her, and covered her eyes with a towel. But we found her left leg was trapped under an air-conditioner stand."

The situation was so delicate, that Jiang and his colleagues decided not to use heavy machinery. They got down on their hands and knees and started digging with their own hands.

Jiang said, "Five or six of us went to lift the debris above her. I stretched out my hand into the space underneath to expand it. I said don't worry about my hand, worry about the girl. At last the space was large enough, and we moved her out slowly."

But there was still more work to be done. Thunder storms, muddy roads and high temperatures continued to hamper the rescue work.

Jiang said, "One of our soldiers kept running back and forth, carrying the injured. The ambulences were far away. The road was bad and it was raining so heavily. Some soldiers had to wade through deep mud."

More than 60 injured passengers were rescued by Jiang's group. Two of them fainted during the operation. Jiang said he almost broke down in the scorching heat.

He said, "It was really difficult. We thought of nothing but rescuing more people. One carriage was almost totally inaccessible. Our work space was tiny, and it was noisy all around us."

Jiang and his colleagues worked for over 30 hours at the site.

He says they had all been eager to see Yiyi in hospital. Sunday afternoon's visit was the first thing Jiang did after finishing work.

He says he hopes the toddler will recover soon, and go on to live a healthy life.
