07-29-2011 14:11 BJT

Beijingers woke up this morning to another heavy rainfall. Over a three-hour period, average precipitation reached 11 millimeters, mostly in the north and west of the capital.

Morning traffic was slowed in some areas. Beijing traffic departments sent all of their police forces out to guide the traffic at intersections that are prone to inundation.

Information was updated through radio stations, and electronic road signs. The fire department also deployed trucks and pumps under 42 bridges to assist drainage departments.

More than one hundred flights were delayed and some were cancelled. Both the Beijing International Airport and Beijing subway have initiated emergency plans to deal with the 30-60 millimeters of rain that is expected later in the day.

The morning rain is just a prelude, according to the meteorological department. Its intensity will move from the west to the east of Beijing.
