Serbs in northern Kosovo blocked roads around Rudare in the country's north for a second day on Saturday.

Troops and armored vehicles of NATO's Kosovo force were again forced to turn back. A NATO spokesman in Kosovo said a convoy of about 30 military vehicles had withdrawn from the barricades, which were put up by hundreds of Serbs to prevent NATO from reaching a base in the Serb-run north of Kosovo.

NATO says the decision was made "to avoid bloodshed".

The northern area has been rocked by violent incidents since Kosovo police moved Monday to assert authority over minority Serbs that reject Pristina's rule. Kosovo's Serb-run north rejects Kosovo's independence.
