In Italy, thousands of demonstrators have protested against the construction of a new high-speed railway line link with France.

Protesters marched to one of the line's construction sites in the north of the country.

Police blocked entry to a tunnel under construction as the demonstrators gathered behind fences, dancing and drumming. Demonstrators have clashed with police on various occasions in the past month over the line. They say two motorways and a railway line already run through the valley and the additional high-speed railway would damage the environment.

France and Italy signed a deal 10 years ago to build the link.

The European Union has told the Italian government work to complete the construction must continue otherwise funding for the project could be withdrawn.
