Religious authorities in most of the Middle East have declared that Monday will be the start of Ramadan, which varies according to the lunar calendar. On Sunday, preparations for the Muslim holy month were underway in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

Ramadan begins the day after the sighting of the crescent moon that marks the beginning of a new lunar month.

Protesters in Cairo are continuing their daily occupation of Tahrir Square which has continued since the uprising began in January.

Protester Mohammad Karam said, "We don't have any problem, we can protest in Ramadan the same way as any normal day. Ramadan will enhance our revolution and will increase our enthusiasm."

Although a lot has changed since the last Ramadan, traditions remain the same.
