25 dead bodies of refugees have been found on a boat by the Italian coastguard near the country's southernmost island of Lampedusa.

The boat had been carrying 268 people upon arrival in Lampedusa. According to a report, the cause of the deaths and the nationalities of those dead remain unclear. Since the unrest in the Middle East broke out early this year, Lampedusa has become one of the transit points for refugees, most of whom came from Tunisia, Libya and sub-Saharan Africa.
