Markets in Tokyo, Seoul and Hong Kong opened higher, in response to the last-minute agreement announced by US President Barack Obama to raise the government's debt limit and avoid default.

Hong Kong's market gained nearly 230 points, or 1.3 percent, to open at 22,739.55. Japan's Nikkei 225 stock average was up over 180 points to 10,013.90. The broader Topix also gained nearly 15 points to 856.19. China's stocks began their August figures slightly up, putting an end to a two-day losing streak.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.08 percent to close at 2,703.78, while the Shenzhen Component Index edged up 0.10 percent to finish at 12,002.42. However, the market was restrained by concerns that the central bank may raise interest rates again this month as July's inflation figure is expected to remain high.
