Clashes between Syrian government troops and protestors have claimed at least 137 lives since Sunday. Government forces have advanced into the central city of Hama, prompting a barrage of international condemnation.

The EU has added 5 people to a list of asset freezes and travel bans, including Syria's Defense Minister. The US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, has called for a swift end to the violence, but says US involvement is unlikely to exceed diplomatic pressure. Britain has also ruled out military intervention. Meanwhile, Italy has recalled its ambassador to Syria and urged other EU nations to follow suit.

Maurizio Massari, Italy Foreign Affairs Spokesman, said, "After what we have seen in the last few days, the increasing repression and the bloody violence against civilians, the first move from the Italian side was minister Frattini proposal to call for an extraordinary meeting of the UN security Council.
