The Libyan government said on Wednesday that rebels failed in their attempt to control and enter the coastal strategic town of Zlitan, 160 kms east of Tripoli. Tuesday's assault by forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi led to fierce street battles that killed at least eight rebels.

Libyan government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim said "They were hit back by our armed forces and by the Zlitan volunteers, maybe you have heard about their losses. "

However, rebels said on the same day that they had fought off an attack on positions around Zlitan, contradicting government claims of victory. Five months into their rebellion, despite winning increasing international support and enjoying the backing of NATO bombing raids on pro-Gaddafi forces, the rebels have failed to make a breakthrough.

The Gaddafi government says the army is still strong. And it denies claims made by France and the UK that NATO's bombardments have weakened the government forces down to 20 percent of their military power.
