It's been almost a year since a devastating mudslide swept through Zhouqu county in northwest China's Gansu province, killing nearly 1,500 people. Many local children remain stricken with heartache from the disaster, but a group of college students has helped bring joy back to their lives.

This is Number One Middle School in Zhouqu county, Gansu province.

Students here are enjoying a memorable summer thanks to volunteers from Northwest Normal University in Lanzhou.

At these makeshift classrooms, college junior Feng Yiyu is teaching high school students.

When the Zhouqu mudslide struck on August 8th last year, he was among the first group of volunteers to arrive at the scene to help victims.

Almost a year later, he has returned to children more optimistic about their lives.

Feng Yiyu, volunteer from Northwest Normal University, said, "The children are in a very good state of mind. They don't look as sad as they did one year ago."

Students thoroughly enjoyed their time with volunteers.

"I feel very thankful to them. They are of great help to us."

For volunteers, it's been a mutually rewarding experience.

They say they will carry on the volunteer spirit at future vacations, and help bring joy to those less fortunate.
