Syria's government says it is succeeding in crushing the revolt in the city of Hama, the epicenter of the latest anti-government protests.

Government tanks renewed shelling the residential districts of the city early on Friday, just as people were beginning their daily fast. There were no immediate reports of protests in Hama. Local residents warned they are running out of medical supplies and foods.

Government forces began their siege of Hama last Sunday, cutting off electricity, phone and Internet services.

Hama, a city of 800-thousand people with a history of dissent, had fallen largely out of government control since June. Rights groups say at least 100 people have been killed in the latest government crackdown, while some estimates put the number as high as 250.

Across the country, tens of thousands of protesters marched through cities to show their solidarity with Hama and demand the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad.
