European stock markets continued their fall on Friday, and saw their biggest weekly decline in nearly three years.

The UK's FTSE 100 index closed 2.71 percent lower, leaving it at its lowest point for nearly a year. The German DAX dropped 2.8 percent, the French CAC 40 dipped 1.3 percent and the Irish ISEQ closed with a 1.5-percent fall.

The Spanish market IBEX 35 fell by 2.3 percent. European leaders' reluctance to increase the size of their bailout fund and quickly implement changes to their powers, such as enhancing the ability to buy up government bonds, have left the currency union without a clear defense against market troubles over the summer.
