With Asia's growing importance in the global economy, ASEAN as the only formally recognized association of nations in the region, has become even more important.

Our correspondent Andy Saputra, met the organization's secretary general, Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, to see how it's responding to the US credit rating downgrade.

Will this signify a change from ASEAN towards other economic partners like China?

Dr. Surin Pitsuwan said, "Inevitability that is going to happen, we have to live with the reality, with the situation, by necessity, we have been waiting for the recovery of the US, for the recovery of the Eurozone, our wait seems to be longer and longer so we just have to manage among and between ourselves it is just so lucky for us, that this is the new growth center of the world and with the global trading system being what it is we can only look at the far east, east Asia for our sustenance."
