Violence has flared again in British cities and towns, Tuesday night. Police across the country have made more than 1,000 arrests since the weekend. The clean-up operation was under way early Wednesday.

Damaged buildings have been boarded up and rubbish in the streets cleared away. Extra police forces have been deployed in London, with armored vehicles and police vans patrolling the streets. But outside the capital in the northwestern city of Manchester, hundreds of youths rampaged through the downtown area.

In the central city of Nottingham, police say rioters threw firebombs through the window of a police station, and set fire to a school. Meanwhile, 44 are reported arrested in Liverpool after about 200 youths hurled missiles at police in a second night of unrest.
