Libyan rebels have claimed the capture of a second strategic town near Tripoli within 24 hours. If confirmed, the seizure of Garyan will complete the encirclement of the capital and stronghold of Muammar Gaddafi. But the claims could not be immediately verified.

Earlier, rebels captured the coastal town of Zawiyah, just west of Tripoli. Rebels may still lack the manpower for an all-out assault on Tripoli, but are hoping their encirclement will bring down Gaddafi's government. In the past, rebels have frequently failed to hold gains, and a counter attack by Gaddafi troops could break the siege.
