President Hu tours Guangdong Province

President Hu Jintao has completed his tour in south China's Guangdong province. President Hu urged the province to step up economic and social development with the aim of making Guangdong, one of China's first moderately prosperous societies.

President Hu Jintao's tour comes on the heels of his opening of the 26th Summer Universiade in Shenzhen last Friday.

In the provincial capital of Guangzhou, Hu Jintao visited several high-tech enterprises including GAC Motor Company, Tianan Hi-tech Ecological Park, and Guangzhou TIT Creative Park to learn about the progress local enterprises have made in scientific innovation and business growth.

The President called on the companies to further boost development and research capabilities, and strive to increase their products' international competitiveness.

During a visit to Jinshazhou, a large affordable-housing district in Guangzhou, Hu Jintao urged the local governments to inject sufficient land and funds into affordable housing projects. He said that every measure should be made to ensure the construction of quality homes and a fair distribution of housing units among low-income earners.

Addressing a meeting held to sum up his visits in Guangdong with the participation of local officials, President Hu Jintao urged local officials to strive to accumulate new development advantages, speed up transformation of the economic growth pattern and deepen the country's reform and opening up process.

In addition, Hu Jintao called for efforts to improve people's living standards and boost social harmony.
