Syrian forces have begun pulling out of the eastern city of Deir al-Zor after crushing armed opposition groups.

Syria TV broadcast pictures of Syrian army tanks departing Deir al-Zor to crowds of cheering bystanders. Residents said government forces had withdrawn tanks from the city on the Euphrates River several days ago. But armored personnel carriers, troops and intelligence personnel remained deployed at roundabouts and junctions of the city in a patten seen in other cities that were attacked by the military and remained besieged. Deir al-Zor, some 432 kilometers east of the capital Damascus, has been a scene of anti-government protests over the past weeks.
