Vice President Biden's visit comes under the shadow of U.S. debt and noises about arms sales to Taiwan. There has been much speculation in China about the purpose behind this official visit.

The visit is hailed by Washington as part of the Obama administration's efforts to "renew and intensify" the U.S. role in Asia. But whether it will succeed in building stronger bilateral ties has become a hot question these days.

Rong Ying, senior research fellow of China Institute of International Studies, said, "The issue of U.S arms sales to Taiwan is a core problem which has affected the 2 nations' relationship for a long time. As for this visit, we hope there will be a solution."

Another anticipated hot topic is the safety of China's assets in the U.S. dollar. As the United States' largest foreign creditor, China has much at stake in a stable U.S dollar.

Earlier this month, Standard & Poor's removed the AAA long-term sovereign credit rating for the United States and lowered it one notch to AA+.

Jin Canrong, professor of School of Int'l Studies, Renmin Univ., said, "I think one of the purposes is to see the situation and the attitude of China toward the lower sovereign credit rating for the United States. So I think he wants to find some help this time."

Apart from these 2 hot topics, the issues of global climate change, the South China Sea and denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula will probably be discussed during the visit.

According to experts, Biden's current visit to China is considered as a continuation and extension of his tour of the country 32 years ago. This high-level visit across the Pacific Ocean may serve to promote the relationship between the two nations.
