The Yemeni opposition coalition has announced the formation, of what it calls the "National Council for Peaceful Revolution Forces." They say it aims to unify forces in ousting President Ali Abdullah Saleh. The move comes one day after Saleh delivered a speech on state TV which promised his supporters a return to Sanaa soon.

The Yemeni Joint Meeting Parties or JMP, the country's mainstream opposition coalition, declared the formation of the "National Council" on Wednesday.

It says the council consists of 1,000 representatives from all opposition forces. And they have elected 143 members to lead the Council against Saleh and his ruling party.

The members have stated that they will later elect a chairman and a 20-member executive board.

A spokesman from the government's ruling party has responded by saying the formation of the council is a clear move to reject solutions initiated by the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Yemen has been embroiled in its political crisis since protests against Saleh erupted in late January.

The embattled president has recently vowed to deal positively with the GCC power transition proposals, despite refusing to sign a deal initiated by it three times.
