100-thousand migrants have come through Agadez in northern Niger since March, fleeing violence in Libya. Among them are many Nigerians, but also many other Africans. Life for them is a difficult struggle.

This is an emergency camp set up in Agadez for the most vulnerable migrants, in particular those who have no means to buy food or pay for their onward journey home.

Ismaila Mahamane, a camp manager, said, "Since opening, this center has taken care of thousands and thousands of migrants from Niger and elsewhere. The International Organization for Migration takes care of transport and food for the migrants and the Red Cross, their shelter."

The migrants travelled here in military convoys from Dirkou, a small oasis about a two day's drive north-east of Agadez. Each of them need to pay over 300 US dollars for the journey. Many are still there, either by choice or because they don't have any means to leave.

Seydu Abdou, Nigerian Migrant, said, There are no roads. On one side there are the rebels, on the other the government forces. They are fighting between them and you are in your bedroom and you don't know what will happen if you go out."

The first wave of refugees arrived at the camp last Friday. For many, the meal served at this camp is the first they have had in days and their stay here provides a short respite before their journeys south continue. But those still stuck in Dirkou will have to wait another two weeks before the next convoy.
