Student protests are continuing in Chile, as parents and grandparents joined a demonstration calling for free and better education.

The Chilean Students Federation which organized Sunday gathering estimated that more than a million students and their families turned out for a program of protest, music and theatre performances. Students have been at odds with the Chilean government for almost 3 months.

High school and university students have refused to attend classes, taken over schools and staged demonstration to press the government to spend more on public education. Many of the protests have ended in violence but Sunday's protest was peaceful and attended by thousands of families with small children. Chile's Education Minister, Felipe Bulnes, said last Friday that the government was planning to implement reforms next week.
